Last night, while eating dinner in my backyard, I listened to an interesting interview on NPR's Fresh Air. Terry Gross was interviewing Charles Mann, the author of a new book entitled "1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created".

It's not necessarily what you might expect. Mann focuses on the ecological ramifications of making the world a smaller place and what that meant for native plants and animals as they were subjected to foreign species.

Among the many topics discussed was how tobacco changed both the new and old worlds. I'm sure you'd find Mann's analysis just as fascinating as I did.
